Ebates.com offers Double Cash Back at over 500 stores for Cyber Monday

For Cyber Monday, over 500 stores are offering double cash back through Ebates.com.

For example, through Ebates.com on Monday, Magazines.com is again offering a whopping 52 percent cash back instead of its 26 percent. That would make an $18 magazine subscription less than $9 after the cash back! I love giving magazine subscriptions as a gift because it's a gift that lasts an entire year and often times you can get the subscription for less than what you'd buy two or three issues at the supermarket for.

Black Friday Gets Way Out of Line When Customer Pulls Gun

Black Friday got off to a rowdy start at a San Antonio mall where police say one shopper pulled a gun on another who punched him in the face while they were waiting in line at a Sears store.

Police Sgt. Rob Carey tells the San Antonio Express-News a man rushed into the store when it opened Thursday night to get to the front of a line, started arguing with people and tried cutting in front of them.

One man who got punched pulled a gun and that scattered shoppers, including the impatient line-cutter who took cover behind a refrigerator. Then he fled.

Carey says the man with the gun had a permit to carry the weapon and isn’t being charged with a crime.

FedEx Prepares for Busiest day in History

FedEx is getting ready for what it predicts will be the busiest day in company history next month.

The company expects to ship more than 19 million packages Monday, December 10. That is 10 percent more than FedEx shipped on its busiest day last year - and more than double the volume it handles on an average day.

FedEx says it thinks online shopping and people mailing holiday packages will bring more than $280 million shipments through the company in the next month.

To handle all of that extra volume, FedEx had added 20,000 seasonal positions to help make the deliveries.

NY Police Seize Over 100 Pounds of Cocaine from Times Square Hotel

The drugs were recovered from three rolling suitcases that were wheeled out of the Crowne Plaza Hotel like so much tourist luggage, with cops swooping in from their surveillance posts to bust six accused coke traffickers who'd turned the neighborhood into the Great White Way, authorities said.

The drugs, seized on Oct. 25, totaled 48 kilos and would have been worth $5 million on the street, officials estimated.

The six alleged traffickers have been indicted on conspiracy and drug possession, according to Bridget Brennan, the city's Special Narcotics Prosecutor, and Joseph D'Amico, Superintendent of the state police, whose offices collaborated on the investigation.

State cops conducting surveillance at the hotel watched as at shortly after 6 p.m. Fernando Alvarado, 23, of The Bronx, left the hotel with a suitcase — later discovered to be holding 30 pounds of coke -- and placed it in the trunk of a waiting silver BMW, officials said.

SARS-like virus plagues Middle East

A new virus from the same family as SARS which sparked a global alert in September has now killed two people in Saudi Arabia, and total cases there and in Qatar have reached six, the World Health Organization said.

The U.N. health agency issued an international alert in late September saying a virus previously unknown in humans had infected a Qatari man who had recently been in Saudi Arabia, where another man with the same virus had died.

On Friday it said in an outbreak update that it had registered four more cases and one of the new patients had died.

“The additional cases have been identified as part of the enhanced surveillance in Saudi Arabia (3 cases, including 1 death) and Qatar (1 case),” the WHO said.

The new virus is known as a coronavirus and shares some of the symptoms of SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which emerged in China in 2002 and killed around a 10th of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide.

Among the symptoms in the confirmed cases are fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

Palm Scanners get Thumbs up Around the U.S.

Palm-scanning technology is popping up nationwide as a bona fide biometric tracker of identities, and it appears poised to make the jump from schools and hospitals to other sectors of the economy including ATM usage and retail. It also has applications as a secure identifier for cloud computing.

Here's how it works: Using the same near-infrared technology that comes in a TV remote control or Nintendo Wii video game, the device takes a super high-resolution infrared photograph of the vein pattern just below a person's skin. That image, between 1.5 and 2.5 square inches, is recorded and digitized.

The PalmSecure device is made by document-scanning manufacturer Fujitsu. So far, no other company has a palm scanner on the market — though at least one other company is working on the technology.

Like many technological breakthroughs, the development began accidentally. A decade ago, a Fujitsu engineer in Tokyo mistakenly ran his hand over a page scanner and it yielded an output that piqued his curiosity. Testing eventually showed that the veins in the palm of your hand are as unique as a fingerprint and can be photographed under infrared light.

Fujitsu has seen double-digit quarterly sales growth in each of the last two years, says Bud Yanak, director of product management and partner development for Fujitsu Frontech North America.

Palm scanners are installed in more than 50 school systems and more than 160 hospital systems in 15 states and the District of Columbia, Yanak says.

Pinellas County Schools were the first in the nation to bring palm scanning to their lunch lines about 18 months ago. They are being used by 50,000 students at 17 high schools and 20 middle schools. Soon, the program will expand to 60,000 more students at 80 elementary schools, Dunham says. The 2% of students who opt out can still use cash.

At hospitals, the scans are making patient registration more efficient, and prevent sharing of information by patients that could lead to insurance fraud, says Carl Bertrams, senior vice president of sales and marketing for palm scan software maker HT Systems in Tampa.

A palm scan's precision record-keeping also avoids possible confusion if patients have the same name. For instance, a hospital system in the Houston area with a database of 3.5 million patients has 2,488 women in it named Maria Garcia – and 231 of them have the same date of birth, Bertrams says.

HT Systems president David Wiener won't reveal revenue but says that since 2007, they've got more than 160 hospitals for clients and have scanned more than 5 million patients.

TriHealth Fires 150 Employees For Refusing Flu Shots

One of Cincinnati’s largest employers fired approximately 150 employees Wednesday for failing to get a required flu shot.

TriHealth offered all of its 10,800 employees free flu shots. Employees had a month to get the flu shot. The deadline was Nov. 16. Employees who did not get the shot were terminated Wednesday, a company spokesperson said.

Employees who were terminated can appeal to be reinstated after receiving the shot.

Jamie Foxx Calls Obama ‘Our Lord And Savior’ During Awards Show

Actor and musician Jamie Foxx called President Barack Obama ‘our lord and savior’ during his appearance on the Soul Train Awards 2012 on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“It’s like church over here. It’s like church in here. First of all, give an honor to God and our lord and savior Barack Obama. Barack Obama,” Foxx joked.

The Oscar award-winning Foxx has been a longtime supporter of President Obama’s and publicly advocated for his re-election during the 2012 campaign season.

I've never cared much for Mr. Foxx but thanks for him saying that dumbass line tonight, a lot of people are right about him. He's nothing but a stupid nigger.

Kids' Christmas Crafts: Button Ornaments

The basic technique for all the ornaments is the same. Bend a pipe cleaner in half and twist once at the top for a loop. Slide buttons over pipe cleaner ends, slipping one end into each hole (if the button has four holes, use two diagonal ones). Use larger buttons for bellies and hat brims. When finished, twist ends of pipe cleaner to secure, and trim. For reindeer legs and antlers and for Santa's arms, bend 2-inch pieces of pipe cleaner in half, slip on between buttons, and twist. Glue on felt for Santa's beard and the snowman's nose. To hang the reindeer, loop a thread around its middle and tie.

Kids' Christmas Crafts: Matchbox Advent Calendar

This Advent calendar starts as a miniature chest of 24 drawers. As its drawers are removed and reversed, a picture is revealed. Remove matches from 24 matchboxes; glue boxes in three stacks of eight. Glue stacks together to make the chest, then cut a strip of paper to wrap around the sides of the chest; glue it in place. With acrylic paint, number the front of each drawer. Turn the chest around; paint a tree or other design on the back. Remove drawers and glue a ribbon tab on the underside of each drawer on the numbered end. From construction paper, cut a square backing for the chest to keep drawers in place and hide the image; attach it at the edges with glue. Fill drawers with small treats and notes, and slip them back into the chest.

Kids' Christmas Crafts: Matchbox Gifts

"The littler the better" is the philosophy of these presents -- and it's easy to make a bunch quickly. Kids can give them to friends and classmates, adding a small treat, such as a holiday note, candy, or trinket.
Matchboxes are available in bulk at grocery or discount stores. For a standard-size matchbox, cut a 33/4-by-2-inch band of decorative paper. Glue band around box; you can attach more paper to box ends. Embellish with string, stickers, or a thin strip of paper glued around box.

To make a card to go inside, cut a 2-by-21/2-inch piece of paper; trim edges with pinking shears, if desired, and fold in half.

Kids' Christmas Crafts: Santa Swizzle Sticks

Download and print Santa clip art onto heavyweight matte paper; cut out. Place hat template on red honeycomb paper and head template on white (position each paper so that its lines are perpendicular to dotted line on template); trace, and cut out. Unfold hat and head; attach to a bamboo skewer using double-sided tape. Dab hat and top of head with craft glue to secure. Glue a 1/4-inch pom-pom to hat. Tape Santa image to head.

Kids' Christmas Crafts: No Sew Holiday Apron Tutorial

When baking your holiday treats, let the little helpers stir up a merry mess. Let the kiddos have fun and keep their clothes tidy with aprons just for the occasion. Attach designs made of washable felt and rickrack to kid-size canvas aprons with fabric glue. An ornament doubles as a pocket (glue bottom and sides), the perfect place to stash a cookie for on-the-job nibbling.
